When I open the file with Excel 2000, I get the following error - “File Error: Data might have been lost.”
I click OK and I can start working with the file (add scores and save the file).
It apears to work fine, but what is the error. Is it something to do with a update refference perhaps.

Just to add - great work, I have been using your schedules and files since the 2006 Footbal World Cup.

Hi there, the only way I can think of improving it is to include the day of the week, and also perhaps to include the 3 & 4 place match.
    And perhaps to number the games? (e.g. swi-cze #1 - por-tur #2 etc)
Apart from that it´s amazing, great effort!!!

Excel Trick…Thank you for this great spreadsheet! I work as a volunteer for a rec Soccer league. We are always having to calculate the wins and losses and team points manually for our tournaments. This Euro sheet looks like it would work for our tournaments but our “point” structure is different (i.e. max of 10 points per game for any one team: 6 pts for the win, 1 point per goal up to a max of 3 goals and 1 point for a shutout - so if team A beat team B 3-0 Team A would get 10 points and Team B zero points, or if Team A beat team B 3-1 then team A would get 9 pts and team B would get 1 point). Team with most points in each bracket moves on to the semi or Qtr finals. Anyway to get the password or a modified version of this sheet to try and use for our tournaments?

    Thanks either way - Steve

    Hello,

Thank you very much for the effort! Really cool! We are actually playing the Euro 08 on PS3 and use this table. But by doing so, we noticed, that in case of equal points, the groups are arranged according to the direct encounters, which is wrong no? Shouldn’t goal difference and goals scored be used to compare?

    Cheers from Basel

Great………… job! I had been using the World Cup 2006 and I can say that your outcomes are really really excellent ones. The EURO 2008 is not exception. Thanks a lot.

I just have confusing about the GMT-time in the spreadsheet. The first match will be at “7 Jun 18:00, GMT time” instead of “7 Jun 18:00, GMT+1 time”, is it right? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    Best regards,
    Meo

Can I have the password so that I can use it on my ppc?

Sorry, but we cannot send you the password.
The PDA version will be released if we find a way to protect it.

    sonic83

that in case of equal points, the groups are arranged according to the direct encounters, which is wrong no? Shouldn’t goal difference and goals scored be used to compare?

Schedule use goal difference, number of goals scrored, coefficient from the qualifing competitions (see sheet “Settings”).

    For example:

    Switzerland 1 2 Czech Republic
    Portugal 2 1 Turkey
    Czech Republic 1 1 Portugal
    Switzerland 2 0 Turkey
    Switzerland 0 2 Portugal
    Turkey 0 2 Czech Republic

    Group A:

    Team W D L F - A Pnt
    Czech Republic 2 1 0 5 - 2 7
    Portugal 2 1 0 5 - 2 7
    Switzerland 1 0 2 3 - 4 3
    Turkey 0 0 3 1 - 6 0

Czech Republic and Portugal has equal points (7), match Czech Republic Portugal - 1:1, equal goal difference, but Czech Republic have a rank 2333, Portugal - 2192.

  48. Excel Trick, 1. June 2008, 21:01

    Meo

The first match will be at “7 Jun 18:00, GMT time” instead of “7 Jun 18:00, GMT+1 time”, is it right? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Match will be at “7 Jun 18:00″ local time (Central European Time (CET)+1). Please try google: “Austria GMT time”.

  49. sonic83, 2. June 2008, 14:26

    @Excel Trick

Okay, I understand, but I still can’t figure why this happens:

    Poland 2 0 1 2 - 1 6
    Croatia 2 0 1 4 - 2 6
    Germany 1 1 1 3 - 3 4
    Austria 0 1 2 1 - 4 1

In my opinion, the table should choose Croatia as number 1 and Poland second. Croatia has +2 and 4 scored while poland has only got +1 and scored 2 only… I am glad to send you my file so you can have a look at it.

    Still, I love this table!

I’m a mac user, hence i can’t open the .exe file. can you pls send the .xls file to me on email?

used the WC ‘06 spreadsheet - brilliant!
    thanks in advance!

  51. Alcides, 2. June 2008, 18:15

I’ve downloaded the file and tried it out… and I must say it’s great… except for one small detail/error: The quarter final winners are paired in the wrong way for the semifinals. The real tournament is schedule to avoid a game between teams who have already played in the groups stage and thats not the case in this xls schedule. Suposing Portugal and Chechs advance and both win their quarter finals, they would meet again in the semis and thats not what really happens. Remember that that case actually occured last Euro with Portugal and Greece. Both were on the same group, advanced to the next stage, won their quarter final matches but were paired with the other winners and only met up again in the final. I guess it should be corrected…

    Apart from that, its perfect!

    Hi @Excel Trick!
    Excellent job you’ve done.
Just a suggestion… can you incude please a list of fixes from version to version?

For example, what have been changed from 23 May to 1st of June versions? What new in the last one? Only languages added or also calculations/fixes?
I forward your app to my friends and I don’t want them be in error using an older/deprecated version.
    Thanks.

Okay, I understand, but I still can’t figure why this happens

If two teams are equal on points, the following criteria will be used to dertermive the rankings:
    1. number of points obtained in the match among the teams
    2. goal difference in the match
    3. …
In your case Poland beat Croatia, i think.

Please mention if there are any code changes Excel_Trick.
I don’t want to retransmit the file to so many friends just because one language has been added or fixed…
You could also post here a new reply like:

    The link has been updated.
    Changes:
    - urdu added;
    - finish fixes;
    - sheet 1 bug fix;
    - sheet 2 layout change.

Would that be too much? :(
    Please…

  57. Alcides, 6. June 2008, 9:56

We used EURO 2008 Regualtion (look at 7.9, 7.10) and official schedule.

I’ve checked your references and you’re right. According to these, strangely enough, the spreadsheet is accurate.

Nevertheless I still find it quite odd they would schedule a meeting between two teams from the same group in the semis… Even odder if you consider that has never happened before in this format of 16 team tournament when both teams from the same group won their quarters finals:

    Euro 1996 - Germany/Czech Republic
    Euro 2000 - Netherlands/France
    Euro 2004 - Portugal/Greece

Could there be anyone or anybody who could clear that for us?

I guess, at least, time will tell…

  59. ciprianmp, 7. June 2008, 9:23

May I make some suggestions for your future work ET?
You could combine all the translations and expressions defined in all the football related spreadsheets you released before (like UEFA Champions League, WorldCup aso) into a common language sheet that you can use it in the future releases…
That will let you less work to do updating translations, just keeping track of the eventual changes required by the future tournaments (just highlighting the new/modified strings in that common sheet).
Then the approach in each translation would be more constant, following the pattern used by the previous translator.
Besides, getting a new language translation would extend all your work to that, so less emails from translators.
Also mention to the translators that they should use their native characters (whenever possible) and not the Romanic/Latinized version of that language (e.g. like the provided Romanian has no “Ş ş Ţ ţ Ă ă Î î Â â” characters that we actually use)…

Sorry if it doesn’t make too much sense to you, I just shared fom my experience working with translators… They eventually come and go after one-two jobs done…
